Long before the interstate highway system was developed, long before trucks carrying huge loads of cargo roared up and down those highways, Carl Sandburg wrote his poem "Chicago." In "Chicago," the poet describes a massive city, proud of its development and proud of its role as the nation's freight handler. Then, Sandburg wrote about railroads. Today, the description remains apt, but refers perhaps to tractor-trailer semi trucks instead.
